Basketball as an integration tool - One Team VIII, Week VII

20/01/2020

The seventh training day of the eighth Euroleague RSC One Team project with Valencia Basket served to work verbal communication between the members of the Maria Auxiliadora Foundation, with games and activities aimed at making the members work together and know how to communicate each other in a proper way.

This session served to know the personal history of Eduardo, who has only been living for 6 months in Spain, but has already managed to integrate thanks to One Team and the Laura Vicuña Center. “When I arrived here I hadn’t friends, I was completely alone until I started going to high school. I signed up for the Center because my cousin had been here for a year and she told me when I arrived that if it was difficult for me to do my homework, it would be great to join the center, I did, and the educators treated me very well” says the protagonist about how he met the María Auxiliadora Foundation.

Since then, he has lived a great evolution, and now he is one more. "These last 6 months they have treated me well in the center, in the high school as well, and I think it's great that despite not being from Spain, they treat immigrants this way". In that process, the last weeks with One Team have been key. “In One Team we work together, teamwork and that is something that helps me a lot. To make friends, here and in the high school, where I have to make an effort, I know that I have to get ahead and this helps me” he says.

Edu has learned through One Team that basketball is a great integration tool. “This is a nice way to make friends. You may also like basketball and me too, and we can form a beautiful friendship. It's getting too short, this is great” he explains.

Maria Auxiliadora Foundation

Promoted by the daughters of María Auxiliadora (Salesianas), its fundamental mission is to respond to the socio-educational needs of children, teenagers, youth and women at risk and/or social exclusion. The Foundation tries to respond, through all the projects and services it carries out, to the needs of the groups in a situation of exclusion and to help transform our society into a more fair and more humane world. The goal is that all the people who participate in the project feel welcomed, valued and protagonists of their own growth process. Through this, social projects for inclusion, promotion and social and labor insertion are promoted.

Ten sessions, one goal

This project "One Team VIII" has planned ten training sessions that will take place on Fridays from November 8 in the afternoon until January. With them, the participants live positive experiences and develop healthy habits of self-improvement that can be transferred to the school or work environment. All this through learning the basics of a collective sport such as basketball, which will help participants to know the values of sacrifice and responsibility that derive from organized exercise, use sport as a formula for personal development and make them take the steps towards that they can find in the practice of any sport activity a way to grow as people.
