Falling Just Short (86-87)

ValenciaBasket fell 86-87 to Barça on the final play of their Supercopa Endesasemifinal. Although they trailed for most of the game, they never stoppedfighting despite struggling offensively, relying instead on their defense tostay in contention. They managed to tie the score twice in the final minute,but a free throw by Punter ultimately tipped the scales in the Catalan team'sfavor. The Taronja* squad trailed for the majority of the first half as variousBarça players took turns stepping up on offense to keep the Azulgrana side inthe lead. In a first half marked by poor shooting efficiency, Valencia Basketleaned on Kameron Taylor—who scored 15 points across the first two quarters—tohead into the break trailing by three. Barça started the second half stronger,building a lead of up to ten points, but the Taronja team ramped up theirdefensive intensity; key defensive plays allowed them to run the floor andregain some rhythm, entering the final quarter down by five. They kept fightinguntil the end and had a couple of chances to tie the game again, but failed tocapitalize, entering the final two minutes with the same deficit. ValenciaBasket managed to tie the game following strong defensive plays that forcedturnovers, turning the match into a nail-biting finish that was ultimatelydecided by Punter.

 “A game of different phases. We struggled to find solutions against defensive switches, and we faced a clear disadvantage in the post due to a lack of available players—an issue we couldn't fully overcome, resulting in us grabbing 14 fewer rebounds than our opponent. Controlling that aspect is fundamental to playing a dynamic game, and it really hampered us. We had moments of doubt but managed to find a way to get back into the game and stay competitive, ultimately coming down to a toss-up at the end that didn't go our way.”
