Valencia Basket 3x3: a commendable run at the Uenohara Challenger, though falling short of the ultimate goal

The men's team reached the semifinals of the Uenohara Challenger in Japan, a tough and highly competitive tournament. Despite finishing fourth—an impressive result—Valencia Basket missed out on qualifying for the Debrecen World Tour by just one spot; a third-place finish would have secured their entry.

In the group stage, the team—comprising Javier Herrero, Carlos Martínez, Iván Aurrecoechea, and Alfonso Ribera—faced the powerful Serbian squad Liman (the eventual tournament winners), losing a close match 17-15. Heading into the second group stage game, both the Taronja squad and the Japanese team Utsunomiya had one loss each, meaning the winner would advance to the knockout stage as the group runner-up. In a fiercely contested match, a buzzer-beater by Javier Herrero sealed a 19-18 victory, sending Valencia Basket through to the second day of competition on Sunday.

The quarterfinals brought an all-Spanish matchup against Fuengirola, the winners of Group C. The Taronja team used their physicality to secure a solid 17-11 win, though it came at a high cost. Alfonso Ribera suffered an injury midway through the game, limiting the team's rotation to just three players for virtually the remainder of the tournament.

In the semifinals, Valencia Basket sought the crucial victory that would grant them a spot in the Debrecen Masters. Despite their physical limitations and inability to make substitutions, the team fought to the very end, ultimately falling 18-14 to the French side, Toulouse.

 Regarding the final tournament standings, the other eliminated semifinalist, Shanghai, posted a better overall performance; they finished third, relegating the Taronja squad to fourth place. Despite failing to secure a spot at the Debrecen Masters, the Taronja team will have a chance to bounce back next week by competing in the Lausanne Masters in Switzerland on August 14 and 15, where they will once again face the world's best teams on their own merit.
