Valencia Basket kicks off the EuroLeague and Liga Endesa with the toughest October in its history

Valencia Basket men’s team will open tomorrow in France with its EuroLeague opening-day game, kicking off an October in which they will play twelve games. Playing a dozen games in one month is something the “taronja” team has only faced once before, in December 2023. Adding to this tough start of the season, Valencia Basket will take on the opening games of October with a schedule density they have never experienced before: five games in eight days.

Twelve games in October

The longest EuroLeague regular season begins today for some teams, although Valencia Basket will wait until October 1st to make their debut in Europe’s top competition, visiting LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. That game in France will mark the start of a month in which our men’s team will face twelve games—six at home and six away. Eight in continental competition and four in the Liga Endesa. This includes the EuroLeague home opener against Virtus Bologna and the ACB home opener against Barça at the Roig Arena. The team will string together trips like Barcelona and Lugo back-to-back, or Monaco and Lleida. They will also have stretches of consecutive home games such as against Joventut Badalona, Fenerbahçe Beko Istanbul, and Dubai Basketball at the Roig Arena.

Looking back at the team’s history, Valencia Basket had only played a dozen games in one month once before. That was in December 2023, when, between the EuroLeague and Liga Endesa they also accumulated twelve games. On that occasion, seven were at home and five were away. The split between competitions was also different then: seven EuroLeague games and five in the Liga Endesa. The record: six wins and six losses.

An unprecedented schedule density

Adding further difficulty to the start of the two competitions they play in, Valencia Basket enters October after playing two national Supercup games the previous weekend. This calendar congestion means they will play five games in eight days: the Endesa Supercup semifinal against Unicaja on Saturday the 27th, the final against Real Madrid on Sunday the 28th (which ended with Valencia Basket’s second title), and this week’s three games against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (Wednesday 1st), Virtus Bologna (Friday 3rd), and Barça (Sunday 5th).

A tough stretch to start the season that will also affect several other EuroLeague teams, though not the three opponents Valencia Basket faces. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne only played one game last weekend, the French League opener in which they crushed SLUC Nancy 115–71. Virtus Bologna participated in the Italian Supercup, but only played one game, as they fell to the eventual champions, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, 86–93, in the semifinals. Barça did not participate in the Endesa Supercup and played their last friendly on Friday, the 26th, in Lleida.
